District 30 Health Fair: Hummus Fest

It was with an open heart that I attended the District 30 Health Fair on Saturday May 4th.

There’s no better feeling in the world than giving to others, freely and happily. The turn out for the event was spectacular and I couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of my friends.

Pictures are worth a thousand words and yes my smile is that big and it’s that real. I light up inside when I think about how important this work is to share - when I think about how my family could have used this health fair when I was a kid.

In addition to word search puzzles, activities that included building a balanced plate and coloring fruits and veggies there was a hummus demonstration!

As promised, here are the recipes that were shared.

Hope you’ll be making them in your kitchens soon!

Classic Hummus

Hummus is simple enough to make at home so you feel like an accomplished cook. It’s not so messy that you don’t want to involve the kids - and it’s versatile with its uses! Easily amp up this dip with additional flavor, spices and veggies!

1 15 oz. can of chickpeas drained and rinsed *liquid reserved
2-3 cloves of garlic
2 tablespoons of tahini
2 tablespoons of olive oil
Juice of ½ a lemon
½ teaspoon of cumin
¼ - ½ teaspoon of salt
Liquid from beans  or water as needed *if hummus is too thick

Add all ingredients to a food processor fit with a steel blade and process until desired thick, creamy texture is reached. Enjoy with a multitude of raw veggies, roasted veggies, crackers, pita chips, on a sandwich, load a veggie burger, top a salad, grain bowl and more!
